Tempest Original rugs offer exceptional value for those wanting a good, dependable turnout rug. Our top tips to fitting your rug correctly: Measure your horse accurately. This can be done with a tape measure. Simply put one end of the tape in the centre of your horses chest and the other end on the horses buttocks where you would expect the rug to finish. Horse rugs are sized in centimetres, inches or feet and inches. Please see associated images for sizing chart When youve bought the rug, take it home and try it on your horse over a clean bedsheet or clean summer sheet- make sure you leave all the tags on. If the rug fits then remove the tags and use, if not, you will be able to return the rug as long as it is in a saleable condition. A badly fitting rug will slip and could cause discomfort or even injury for the horse, and could result in damage to the rug itself. How can I tell if the rug fits? The rug should fit well over the withers and the shoulders so that the horse can move freely without the rug slipping back. The straps should be tight enough to hold the rug in place, but not so tight that they cause the rugs shape to distort on the horses back. If too tight they may cause pressure points around the horses chest and wither area. Cross surcingles should be fastened so you can fit a hands breadth between the surcingles and the horses body. This means that the straps are tight enough to prevent legs becoming caught should the horse lie down, but not so tight to cause discomfort. If the rug has leg straps, they should be fastened so that the left strap is passed around the left hind leg and fastened back to the left side. The right strap should then pass around the right hind leg, loop through the left strap, and then fasten to the right side. There should be about 4-5 inches between the strap and the horses leg to prevent the rug slipping without causing the horse any discomfort. Please see attached images for sizing charts. Please note the build of the horse will affect the fit of the rug, if your horse is heavy set you may need to go up a size. This is only a quide. If you have any queries in relation to fitting your rug, please contact a member of our qualified team who will happy to advise on the correct fit for your horse.

Horse Rug Size Guide:

The fit of your rug is extremely important to ensure the comfort of your horse and to prevent rubbing and rug slippage. As horses of the same height at the wither come in a variety of shapes and sizes, it is useful to take certain measurements of your horse.

Using a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the center point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the center of the tail. When you have the measurement, remove 10cm (4inches) and choose your horse’s size from the size guide table. Bear in mind that every horse is different and that this table is a guide only.

Rugs WEIGHTS

Horseware® rugs come in a variety of weights. To make it easy, we’ve created this little temperature scale. It explains the weight available for each rug and is located under each product section.

A turnout rug acts as a waterproof insulator layer, helping to maintain condition in cold weather. However be aware that conditions may vary in a short time span. Always ensure your horse is comfortable at all times.

What rug suits my horse?

For a deep shouldered horse with a deep neck and wide build you would need the XL cut, which is 20% deeper in the neck and sides to give them room, or you could choose the Optimo style rugs which have the ultimate freedom of movement.

For a deep shouldered, narrow horse you would be advised to have a Surefit design with V-Front closure.

For an average build of horse, go with a classic neck cut or if you prefer to give them more comfort again, a V-Front fit would suit.

For high withered narrow horses a Wug® helps to reduce the wither pressure. For very narrow or young horses the Wug® or All-In-One design rugs are good choices to help fit their shape and prevent the rugs from slipping.
